HR Director Spotlight | Cindy Chau

180DC UNSW would not be a society without its HR Director managing the internal relations of the team. Cindy Chau, a third year Commerce & Information Systems student, joined 180DC at the start of 2020 and has since blossomed into a logistical powerhouse.

If you're interested in learning about Cindy's time as HR Director or looking to become a HR Director with 180DC UNSW in 2021, then you've come to the right place! Read on below for more information.

1. What does your role entail?

My role is extremely rewarding in the fact that I actually work directly with both the Consulting team and the Operations team. I am in charge of organising and overseeing the logistics throughout the entire recruitment cycle, and I work very closely with the Consulting Directors to ensure that the entire process runs as smoothly as possible. This involves organising interviews, planning and adhering to strict timelines and carrying out all the administrative related tasks. I also implement new ways to ensure that the entire process is automated to its best ability for better efficiency during the period.

Outside of these recruitment periods, I am also in charge of planning and running our internal Buddy Development program. I handle all the logistics in terms of forming the internal Buddy groups, and am constantly planning and coming up with new initiatives and structures to enhance our consultants’ experiences!

2. Why was the HR role appealing to you?

The main reason why I found the role of HR Director appealing was the fact that this was a 'behind-the-scenes' role. Within the Operations team, there are numerous logistics, planning and organising which we do to ensure that our consultants and partnered non-profit organisations have a lovely experience with us. As such, I am exposed to both teams and I knew that I was making an impact even, if it is an indirect one. I also really enjoy working and managing people and handling strict deadlines, so the HR role really gave me the best of both situations.

3. What has been your most memorable moment with 180DC?

My most memorable moment with 180DC would definitely have to be our Beach and Board Games day with both the Operations and Consulting Directors. That was definitely the day where I got to really know the Directors from both teams better and could see their fun and social side come to light.

Although half our team had to head back to uni to work on the recruitment cycle logistics, the entirety of the day really inspired me to put my all into the society as I witnessed the dedication and talent of our team and how passionate everyone is about this society.

4. What are your words of advice for those looking to become a HR Director with 180DC in 2021?

Just like any other role, being a HR Director requires you to effectively manage your time and ensure that strict deadlines are adhered to. If these responsibilities are your strengths and something you enjoy, then I really do encourage you to apply for the role!

This entire year has honestly been a huge learning curve for me, and I am constantly inspired and constantly learning so much from the people around me within this society. You'll get to meet so many people from different backgrounds and will encounter many situations which you have to adapt and think of solutions to.

Although it may be overwhelming at first, just know that everyone here is extremely supportive and will always be there to help you out!
