Marcus Nguyen | Events Director Spotlight

Marcus Nguyen is a second year Science/Social Science student who is majoring in Immunology and International Relations. In his spare time, Marcus is fixated on car racing and invites rally and F1 fans to hit him up.

Joining 180DC as an Events Director in 2021, Marcus has also had prior experience within 180DC as a consultant. He shares with us in this interview how he has found the experience of being an Events Director so far.

1. What are the roles and responsibilities associated with being an Events Director?

Well as an Events Director, there's a lot more that goes on behind the scenes!

These include:

  • Creating and planning the event

  • Budgeting (you would be surprised at how much things like dinner can cost for 80 people)

  • Captioning and making memes to hype up events

  • Actually making the event run smoothly

2. What inspired you to 1) join 180DC and 2) become an Events Director?

I joined 180 because I always wanted to learn about how to best deliver solutions and ideas. With the social impact aspect, it was like a dream come true for me to join 180, and I haven't regretted a single moment since (despite what the amount of meetings I have would suggest).

I wanted to be an Events Director because I really wanted to make 180 a fun place that wasn't just a consulting club but a society! I remember that Jay messaged me at 8:40 at night asking me if I was free for a call (to discuss if I'd want to do it) and I sprinted 200m just to make sure I could get the position.

3. What have been your favourite highlights as an Events Director?

  • People coming to Trivia Night (ha ha :(((((((() but also Uber Eats night!

  • Getting a complimentary box of Subway Cookies for buying over $350 of Subway in one go.

4. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an Events Director?

  • Don't be afraid to try new things! You never know how they'll pan out and if you bring good vibes everyone will join in.

  • Food costs a LOT. Like a lot. $380 worth of Subway barely covered 80 people. Don't be like me, invest in solid food options.
